What the Bible Teaches About Unconditional Love

We have heard and praised the unconditional love Christ showed for us. But if we only become grateful for it and stop there, it might not profit us enough. The Apostles in the New Testament repeatedly taught the believers that it is all about understanding this love and then applying it toward others. To receive the grace and blessing stored for us with God through Jesus Christ, each of us must imitate Jesus in His unconditional love. Faith, which is the center and the currency between us and God, is exchanged not by persuasion but by action. You were born again not only by believing but also by confessing—that is, action was added to it, the kind that requires the will to act against opposing strong ideas.

Once you start abiding in Jesus Christ, you bear fruit through Him by following His footsteps. In the spiritual world, things are connected with one another, though they may seem independent. The truth is, the simple things you do to please God affect and change many things. When you show unmerited kindness to your brother or neighbor in light of God’s love, it only requires you to overcome the logical, worldly mind. But with God, this is a praiseworthy act that allows His Son and His grace to be revealed through you because you acted in faith.

This faith that expresses itself through action will not only exalt and bless you, but it will also disturb the kingdom of the evil one, because you are allowing yourself to be a reflector of Christ and His grace. And His grace is not just an idea, but a powerful and tangible instrument that works wonders and miracles. The grace of God enables you to walk in freedom and power; it also strengthens the Church of Christ to grow and become His strong and shining Body.

God’s Spirit moves in our worship and communion to heal, bless, and visit us, as long as we let Him. A heart that is obedient and walks in unconditional love will attract His Spirit into one’s life, and therefore into the Church.

Verses that relate to love

  • John 13:34–35 – “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
  • 1 Peter 4:8 – “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”
  • 1 John 4:8 – “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

Unconditional love does not mean emotional or sentimental attachment. In fact, as Christians, we must walk in prudence and gentleness to prevent any intrusion of the enemy’s attacks on the soul. The new life we embrace in Christ undermines the old nature, which does little or nothing to acknowledge Him. As a result, the old way of life is weakened, and the new one prevails. Over time, we will let go of many things for Jesus’ sake—in order to please Him and to put Him on. Step by step, the things we once relied on for boldness will be replaced with spiritual inheritances that we gain as we grow.

The spiritual journey is filled with ups and downs, victories and humiliations, gains and losses, rejoicing and sorrow. Sometimes the despondency can be so deep that one may be tempted to fall back and become prey to the evil one. The Bible testifies to this truth: resurrection comes after death, laughter comes after tears, victory comes after battle, and light comes after darkness. That is why the Cross is the constant experience of life—and that is why many wear it around their necks. Honestly speaking, the journey is terrifying, even though it is rewarding—with rewards of eternal value.

But there is good news in this adventurous and dangerous pursuit of divine life. It is called LOVE. Before you decide that you are a loving person, pause and examine your understanding. Many believers assume their knowledge of the Truth is sufficient, and they hold a smiling, approving image of God in their minds. Instead, go to the Bible. Study the story of His people—what they went through, and how God’s judgment was both inevitable and serious. After studying, do not conclude that you are better than those in the stories. Do not assume that God is different today. Do not think the righteous in the Bible are you and the sinners are “him” or “her.”

Rather, fear the reality that your earthly life is just as vulnerable to judgment as theirs. Do not presume that tomorrow will certainly be fine—it might not. So, what should you do?

2 Corinthians 6:1-2

As God’s co-workers, we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. For He says:

“In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.”

I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor; now is the day of salvation.

So here is the way to save your days from judgment:

Win God’s favor and attain His compassion by walking in unconditional love. If you encounter someone who needs to be judged, pause and refrain from playing the role of judge. Instead, show mercy, speak gently, and exercise prudence against foolish talk, lest you be trapped by the same evil. I am not speaking about pleading the cause of the poor alone; I am referring to our daily interactions with people around us, where either ego or our renewed personality guides our character. It is amazing how God takes great interest in how our interactions unfold. He has placed a 'key' there that can unlock His favor and salvation. Life takes a direction of prosperity—or the opposite—depending on how interactions are handled. The law that defines the right path is called Love. This is not about appearances or showing off; it is about how merciful and gentle we can be in challenging times. Are we willing to crucify our selfish urges, or do we walk in justified evil ways and still expect God to bless us?

Ephesians 4:1-2 (NIV)

As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

Ephesians 4:32 (NIV)

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

In these verses, Paul is not giving us an option but a directive with serious consequences if ignored. He describes the only safe way to live. Do not rely on your spiritual anointing or your supposed attachment to God to live a free and prosperous life. Instead, be attentive to how people around you—family and neighbors—perceive you. God said, "Love your neighbor," and "Love your brother." This implies that, without looking far, you must take care of those close to you before seeking other means to succeed in life.

So solve your life's problems NOW by starting to walk in UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.
